Gone flishing

real or photoshop?
Today in math class, we had to decide the name and symbol for our particular class, because the same teacher teaches a lot of different classes. Strangely enough, the final decision for the name was Flish (see The Future is Wild), and the winner for the symbol was a picture drawn by a student who had just been doodling, thinking he had no chance to win. (There was a contest.) A lot of people thought it was the worst drawing, but just to be funny voted for it. It was a few lines that formed the shape of a fish with wings drawn by Picasso (i'll try to get a picture soon).  I didn't really care, because I wasn't a big fan of my own picture either. I drew what looked like a mockingjay pin from the Hunger Games.

  1. Doesn't sound like the name or the doodle have anything to do with math. Interesting.

  2. I think your class did a great job deciding. At my job, we spend - literally - months trying to develop names and logos. They call it "branding." I always say to people - just pick something! It doesn't matter! It's silly to waste time obsessing about lines and colors. The important thing is to do the math...

  3. I don't remember ever being in a class that had a name, or a brand. I suppose that just dates me, but I wonder how the name will be used and affect the class as you go along. I am also wondering what is with the cats. Can you explain?

  5. re Flish - which is not a word? - I don't get it. The Flish will help the teacher remember which class he is in??? sort of good for bonding the class I guess.

when i was growing up branding was burning a mark in a cow.....and later on my dad had a brand which he could heat and put a mark in a piece of leather. did I ever show it to you? i have it in the red house.

i love reading your blog. keep it up! I love hearing about schools.but can you also restart your thursdays on geary?
